The twelth earl of Derby originated the Oakes stakes. now one of the 'classic races' and named after his hunting-box at Woodmansterne. In the following year in 1780 he established a sweepstake for three-year-old colts. This, the first Derby, was won by Sir C. Bunbury's chestnut colt Diomed. Epsom Salts are a reminder that the town was once better known for its medicinal springs.
