Epsom is famous for Epsom Salts and the Derby . The Epsom Derby and Oaks were established in 1779 and 1780 though annual races had been held at Epsom since the 1730s. The twelth earl of Derby originated the Oakes stakes. now one of the 'classic races' and named after his hunting-box at Woodmansterne. In the following year in 1780 he established a sweepstake for three-year-old colts. This, the first Derby, was won by Sir C. Bunbury's chestnut colt Diomed. Epsom Salts are a reminder that the town was once better known for its medicinal springs.
Epsom has excellent road and rail connections in the south of England being just three miles north of Junction 9 on the M25. Central London is about 14 miles and fast trains from Epsom to London (Victoria) take about an hour. Leatherhead is for miles and Banstead three miles. Dorking is about eight miles and Kingston-upon-Thames seven miles.
