Mansfield : Mansfield is mentioned in Domesday as Mamesfield and had a mill, fishery and two churches. It was once the home of Mercian Kings and later a royal hunting resort in Sherwood Forest. The town lies on the River Maun about 13 miles north of Nottingham and probably derives its name from 'open land by the River Maun'. It is the largest town in the county and was once famous for having the largest independent brewer in the country.
Mansfield is about 12 miles north of Nottingham and about 12 miles south-east of Chesterfield. Nerwark to the east is about 17 miles. The M1 motorway is about six miles at Junctions 28 and 29 and Mansfield Railway station is on the Robin Hood line to Nottingham.
