The chalk crown cut into the Downs was to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII. It dates from Roman times and owes its original growth to its location at the first ford of the River Stour for travellers on the old British highway now known as the Pilgrim's Way.
The thirteenth century saw Wye at the height of its fame as a Royal Manor. To the north of the village is the beautiful Godmersham Park, a regular haunt of Jane Austen, and Loantigh House, the birthplace of Cardinal John Kempe. Nearby is the famous medieval village of Chilham with its castle.
Wye has excellent communications having its own railway station and easy road access via the M20. Ashford is about five miles away and has Eurostar services to Paris taking about two hours.
