Merrylands Farm

Church Road, Great Bookham, Surrey

Merrylands Farm: Merrylands Farm is a small retirement development consisting of farmhouse-style apartments and cottages grouped around an old farmhouse dating from the 19th century. The old farmhouse has been converted to form 2 two-bedroom apartments and there are eight cottages.

There is a visiting scheme manager and emergency alarm system with attractive gardens. Great Bookham station is within walking distance.

Great Bookham is situated just below Leatherhead on the A246 Guildford Road. It offers good local facilities but more comprehensive shopping can be found at Leatherhead.

Nearby there are many interesting places to visit including Polesden Lacy, a magnificent house in some 1400 acres on the North Downs. It was remodelled in the early part of the twentieth century and is famous for its beautiful tapestries and paintings. There is a walled rose garden and a variety of walks in the Edwardian gardens and landscaped park. There are several golf courses in the area and the Thorndike Theatre in Leatherhead has an excellent reputation.

Facilities: These include a visiting scheme manager and emergency alarm system with attractive gardens.

HISTORY

Great Bookham is mentioned in Domesday as Bocheham as is Little Bookham so the settlement must have divided at some point. At that time there was a church and a mill though the present church dates mostly to the twelth century. There are several interesting monuments not least one to Cornet Francis Geary who died at the head of his troop having been ambushed by rebels in the American War of Independence. St Nicholas Church was visited by George VI and Queen Elizabeth whilst on their honeymoon when staying at Polesden Lacy.

Access:

Road and rail communications are good with trains to both Guildford and London (Victoria), the latter taking about 45 minutes. The A24 London to Worthing Road runs to the east of the village and the M25  at Leatherhead gives fast access to the motorway network in the south of England.
