Gershwin Court

Gershwin Road, Basingstoke, Hampshire

Basingstoke: Basingstoke is mentioned in Domesday as Basingstoches and having a church and three mills. Today it is a thriving commercial and residential town with good communications north and south. The name derives from 'Basa's people's outlying farmstead' and for many years was not much larger than its neighbour Odiham or its close namesake, Basing. Basingstoke expanded with the coming of the canal in the late eighteenth century and then the railway but it wasn't until the 1950's that major development took place in a short space of time.

Unfortunately the town is spoilt by its ring roads but the old town has some ancient buildings and Deane's almshouses in London Street are of seventeenth century origin. The ruined chapel of the Holy Ghost was built in the thirteenth century. Basing nearby retains its village character and passed into the hands of the Paulet family who demolished the old motte and bailey castle and built Basing House. This was later destroyed by Cromwell in a famous seige.

Gershwin Court: Gershwin Court was completed by Barratt Developments in 1988 and consists of thirty-two flats in a courtyard development close to an Asda supermarket.

Facilities: These include a resident manager and emergency alarm service in gardens and grounds and with parking within the development. It is short walk to the local supermarket.

Access: Road and rail communications are excellent with the M3 motorway (Junctions 6 & 7) about two miles and four miles respectively and frequent and fast trains to London (Waterloo) taking just over forty-five minutes. Newbury is about sixteen miles and Alton eleven miles. Andover is twenty-one miles and Hook eight miles.
