About Retirement Housing
Before the 1970s there was very little private retirement housing for sale in the United Kingdom. In the public sector there were more than 300000 sheltered housing units to rent but nothing for sale. Retirement housing has evolved out of sheltered housing and includes those developments which offer some or part of the facilities normally associated with sheltered housing.
Generally speaking these have been held to be five in number and include a resident manager, laundry, communal lounge, guest suites and communal gardens. Today there are about 5000 developments of one sort or another offering various styles of retirement housing and degrees of help and assistance from virtually straightforward estate management services to care in your own new purpose built home.
